THE LION BLOG: Limits & Boundaries

What’s happening people?

Hope all is well.

I was watching the footage on the NBA webpage of Michael Jordan and his speech after being inducted in the NBA Hall of Fame. I’ve always had an interest in basketball as a kid but only recently did I really get into following the NBA (Miami Heat, all day, everyday! Chea).

Anyway, MJ gave a dope speech, recounting his memories and spent a lot of time talking about his competitive nature and what pushed him to become the best player he could be. He ended his speech by saying that “limits, like fears, are often just illusions.”

His speech got me thinking about my situation and what propels me to be the person I aim to be. I don’t aim to be the best MC to ever live. I aim to be the best MC I can be. And more importantly, I aim to be the best person I can be. But what drives me in that pursuit?

For MJ it was the people who doubted him and looked him over; the people who viewed his perceived limits rather than viewing his ability, potential, and work ethic. As individuals, life always throws us challenges to test our limits and at times we surpass them and other times we don’t. But what we fail to see is that most of the times, these tests don’t define or prescribe our limits, but rather we do.

As individuals, our minds tell us our limits and usually it aligns itself with our sense of comfort zones. When we step out of our comfort zones, we tend to feel like we we’ve reached our limit. People like MJ, who reach heights of greatness in a particular field, realise that point and understand that most of the times, we can control our own situation and that through hard work and dedication, we can achieve what we want to achieve, regardless of the tests life throws at us. For me, I know that I am my own worst enemy. The only person who can hold me back is myself. Life may test me, but it can never stop me unless I let it. Watching MJ’s speech was a re-affirmation of that idea as told by one of the greatest basketballers ever: “Limits, like fears, are often just illusions.”
